Planned Parenthood of Central Jersey is participating in a nationwide campaign with MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation titled "GYT: Get Yourself Tested." The goal is to increase testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, and sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, among those under 25.
New Jersey ranks fifth in the country for rates of HIV/AIDS. One in 308 women 13 or older in New Jersey is living with HIV/AIDS.
GYT will be ongoing throughout the month — National STD Awareness Month — with a mix of promotions on-air, online and in the real world. The central hub of the campaign, www.gyt09.org, will provide information about STDs and will direct users to the nearest testing location. A mobile companion to www.GYT09.org, the GYT short code (49809), provides details about local testing locations to mobile phones.
"Most people would be shocked to hear how prevalent sexually transmitted infections are among young people," said Phyllis Kinsler, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Central Jersey.
Planned Parenthood of Central Jersey also will be offering free or low-cost testing and treatment services at all six of its health centers in Middlesex and Monmouth counties. The health centers are at:
