Advocacy 101
This is where to find our tips on talking! Learn a variety of effective ways to be an advocate for choice. We have ideas that let you advocate for five minutes, five hours, or five years. Take charge – yours may be the voice that gets heard.
STEP 1: Learn the facts! Explore our library, check out our talking points and sign up to receive our action alerts. Once you know what is going on, people will turn to you for the answers.
Learn how a bill becomes a law and where you can have an impact – You may have heard something about the lonely old bill on Capitol Hill, but do you really know the process of how a bill becomes a law? Or what the ‘cloture rule’ is? Or even how lawmakers spend their days? Find the answers to all of these questions, and more, by clicking here! Find Your Legislator -- Use our legislator database to find information on your representatives. |
STEP 2: Start Talking! Opponents of choice are everywhere – in New Jersey’s Statehouse, on Capitol Hill and in your communities. There are many ways you can take action to protect your rights.
Contact Your Legislator – It’s easy to let decision makers know you’re watching. The most effective way to get your legislator’s attention is to send a personalized letter. Let them know why you are an advocate for choice and ask them where they stand. It’s always important to be polite and ask for a response. Don’t have time to write a letter? Use the phone, e-mail or fax. Show Up at the Statehouse – Take a trip to Trenton when lawmakers are debating an issue that is important to you. Our action alerts will let you know when a hot issue is coming up. Be sure to wear your support on your sleeve – contact us before you come and we will get you pins and stickers. Can’t make the trip? Watch your legislators in action on the web. Live broadcasts are available on-line at www.njleg.state.nj.us. Send a Thank You Note (or ask for an explanation) – Send a quick thank you note to decision makers who support reproductive choice and family planning. Ask the others to explain and defend their position. Get Your Friends and Family Involved – Consider joining a choice group that reflects your interests – Republicans for Choice, Lawyers for Choice, or your local Vox campus organizing group. |
